“Let Them” Is it Really that Simple?
Have you ever felt burdened by someone else’s decisions? Here’s the truth: we can’t control other people. Whether it’s a family member, friend, partner, or coworker, their actions are outside our control—but our response isn’t. That’s where a powerful mindset shift comes in. You may have heard of Mel Robbins’ “Let Them” theory, which went viral on social media. In her words, it’s about not letting other people’s opinions, drama, or judgments derail your peace. If someone is doing something you don’t like… let them.
“Our energy is limited. The practice of this simple but profound theory frees us from the draining cycle of focusing on what is ultimately beyond our control…other people,” explained Cuyuna Regional Medical Center Psychologist Kristin Furan, PsyD.
“Let them” allows others to be as they are. “The practice of “let me” allows me to step out of judgment and reactivity, and instead into awareness and intentionality. It gives me time and energy back to focus on myself,” said Furan. “We can learn to step back out of reactive mode, reset our stress response (think “pause and breathe…let them and let me”), and focus on what is in our control- how we respond and show up in our lives. Such a way of being in the world allows us to live our values, fostering contentment.”
So next time you find yourself stressed, frustrated with a difficult situation or interaction, or feeling powerless and as though you have no control, remember, “Let Them.” “It will lead to greater peace in one’s life,” said Furan.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. The month aims to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, encourage people to seek help and support, and educate people on mental health conditions. To schedule an appointment with a member of CRMC’s Behavioral Health team call 218-545-1047.
