Innovation: Orthopaedic Team Contributes to Robotic Surgery Study

CROSBY, Minn. – Cuyuna Regional Medical Center (CRMC) is proud to announce that two members of its Orthopaedic team contributed to a recently published study in the Journal of Experimental Orthopaedics. The research, titled VELYS Robotic-Assisted Total Knee Arthroplasty: Enhanced Accuracy and Comparable Early Outcomes Versus Manual Instrumentation During Adoption, examined the accuracy and early clinical outcomes of the VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted solution for total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

Board-certified Orthopaedic Surgeon Erik Severson, MD, served as a lead author, while board-certified Nurse Practitioner Adam English, CNP, was the research coordinator for CRMC. The medical center was one of five sites participating in the study. Findings demonstrated that the VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution system for TKA can be safely adopted without negatively impacting leg alignment or increasing the rate of adverse events. The VELYS™ robotic system provides real-time feedback to surgeons performing knee replacements, ensuring precise internal and external balance of the knee. This cutting-edge technology, powered by artificial intelligence (AI), is setting a new standard for surgical precision and improving patient outcomes.

Dr. Severson has been practicing at CRMC since 2010. A highly accomplished surgeon, he has received numerous honors and awards and has been featured in multiple publications. He was recently recognized as a top orthopaedic surgery doctor by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Additionally, he ranks first among 12 providers in the area for total knee joint arthroplasty repair and first among eight providers for total hip replacement.

English, a Certified Nurse Practitioner, earned his certification in 2015. Before that, he worked as an orthopaedic joint coordinator in CRMC’s Orthopaedic Clinic for two years and has served the medical facility in various capacities since 2005.

CRMC is recognized as a top hospital for Orthopaedics by U.S. News & World Report and is home to more than 10 orthopaedic specialists dedicated to preventing, diagnosing, and treating disorders of the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves. Read the full study online at https://esskajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jeo2.70163.
