Non-Surgical Knee Treatments

CRMC’s orthopaedic specialists work closely with you to determine the best possible treatment options for your condition, personal needs, and lifestyle. Whenever possible, we emphaszie conservative, non-invasive treatment methods to manage and treat hip pain. Arthritis pain in your hip may be relieved through injections, lifestyle modifications, medications, physical therapy, or plasma injections. At CRMC, we manage patients with non-surgical treatments as long as possible.

Reduce swelling, pain, or joint stiffness

Steroid injections, also called corticosteroid injections, are anti-inflammatory medicines used to treat joint pain. Injections can be given into a joint or muscle. The injections usually take a few days to start working, although some work in a few hours. The effect usually wears off after a few months. If you are having an injection to relieve pain, it may also contain local anaesthetic. This provides immediate pain relief that lasts a few hours. You should be able to go home soon after the injection.

If you have tried all other nonsurgical treatment methods and your pain continues to limit your activities, viscosupplementation may be an option. In this procedure, a gel-like fluid called hyaluronic acid is injected into the knee joint. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the synovial fluid surrounding joints. It acts as a lubricant to enable bones to move smoothly over each other and as a shock absorber for joint loads. People with osteoarthritis have a lower-than-normal concentration of hyaluronic acid in their joints. The theory is that adding hyaluronic acid to the arthritic joint will facilitate movement and reduce pain.

In recent years, doctors have learned that the body can heal itself. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a form of regenerative medicine that can harness those abilities and amplify the natural growth factors your body uses to heal tissue.

PRP therapy uses injections of a concentration of a patient’s own platelets to accelerate the healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints. In this way, PRP injections use each individual patient's own healing system to improve musculoskeletal problems.

PRP injections are prepared by taking anywhere from one to a few tubes of your own blood and running it through a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets. These activated platelets are then injected directly into your injured or diseased body tissue. This releases growth factors that stimulate and increase the number of reparative cells your body produces. Ultrasound imaging is sometimes used to guide the injection.

Platelet-rich plasma has been found to significantly enhance the healing process and demonstrated to improve function and reduce pain. Some of the key advantages of PRP injections are that they can reduce the need for anti-inflammatories or stronger medications like opioids. In addition, the side effects of PRP injections are very limited because, since the injections are created from your own blood, your body will not reject or react negatively to them.
