New Orthopaedic Fellow and Hire Dr. Matthew Klassen
Cuyuna Regional Medical Center (CRMC) is excited to announce that its 2027 orthopaedic fellow, Matthew Klassen, D.O., has signed with the organization and will remain at CRMC as a full-time orthopaedic surgeon beginning in 2028. Klassen joins CRMC from University of Michigan Health – West after being selected through a competitive fellowship matching process. During his fellowship, he will receive advanced training in upper and lower extremity orthopaedic care before transitioning into his full-time role with the organization.

Being paired with a medical facility for a fellowship means a physician has been selected to complete advanced, specialized training at that institution. During this time, fellows spend one year gaining focused expertise and experience that helps shape their future careers.
About the CRMC Fellowship Program
CRMC is home to the Minnesota Center for Orthopaedics Adult Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship program. Each year, a new fellow is selected to train alongside CRMC orthopedic surgeons Dr. Erik Severson and Dr. Jeffrey Klassen gaining hands-on experience to prepare for private practice and the complexities of patient care. During his fellowship and employment. Klassen will provide care at both CRMC and Riverwood Healthcare Center campuses.
Education and Training
Klassen is currently completing his orthopedic surgery residency at University of Michigan Health – West, with an expected graduation of June 2027. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from A.T. Still University – Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Commitment to Orthopaedic Excellence
“We are excited to welcome Dr. Klassen to our team,” said Erik Severson, MD, Medical Director of the Lower Extremity Fellowship. “Our fellowship program is designed to provide comprehensive, hands-on training in a high-volume, patient-centered environment. Dr. Klassen’s strong academic background and commitment to excellence make him an outstanding addition to our program and our community.”
As a Minnesota native and the son of orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Klassen, Klassen’s arrival reflects both a meaningful continuation of local ties and CRMC’s ability to attract high-quality candidates while supporting the growth of healthcare talent within the region.
