A Wedding Day, Reimagined at CRMC

A Wedding Day, Reimagined at CRMC

What started as an unexpected visit to the Emergency Department became a once-in-a-lifetime moment for a local couple—thanks to the compassionate care team at Cuyuna Regional Medical Center (CRMC).

From ER Visit to “I Do”

Cindy and David first met 32 years ago on April 9 at a friend’s birthday party over a game of poker. Since then, they’ve built a life together—celebrating that date every year.

This year, they planned to finally make it official with a courthouse wedding in Walker.

But after Cindy experienced a fall while volunteering at the Emily Food Shelf earlier that week, the couple found themselves at CRMC instead—facing the possibility of postponing their long-awaited day.

A Care Team Steps In

After learning their story, members of the CRMC team stepped up to make sure the day didn’t go unnoticed.

    Chaplain Major (Ret.) Eusebia Rios

Together, they organized a commitment ceremony in the hospital chapel—transforming an unexpected situation into a meaningful celebration.

The team decorated the space and even created a veil for Cindy, adding thoughtful, personal touches to the day.

One of the most memorable moments came when David played a song he had written for Cindy, bringing many in attendance to tears.

“In moments like these, we’re reminded that care goes far beyond clinical treatment,” said Chaplain Rios. “It’s about honoring people’s lives, their stories, and the moments that matter most.”

A Meaningful Moment—Even More Than Planned

Earlier this year, David had surprised Cindy with a proposal while on vacation. They chose April 9—again—as their wedding day.

While their original plans changed, the experience at CRMC became something even more meaningful.

“We can’t thank the team enough—truly, from the bottom of our hearts,” said Cindy and David. “What started as a difficult situation turned into something incredibly special.”

More Than Care

For the CRMC team, the moment reflected something deeper than clinical care.

“This is what community care looks like,” said Stacy Weldon, Chief Nursing Officer at CRMC. “It’s about showing up for people—not just in their most difficult moments, but in their most meaningful ones too.”

A Day to Remember

April 9 will always hold special meaning for Cindy and David—now Mr. and Mrs. Schaumburg.

CRMC is honored to have been part of a moment they will carry with them forever.
