Stroke Awareness Month: Know the Signs and BE FAST
During Stroke Awareness Month, Cuyuna Regional Medical Center is reminding the community that quick action can save a life during a stroke.
When a stroke happens, every minute matters. Recognizing the warning signs and calling 911 immediately can help reduce brain damage, disability, and long-term complications.
Know the Signs of a Stroke
Health experts use the acronym BE FAST to help identify stroke symptoms:
- Balance — Sudden dizziness, loss of coordination, or trouble walking
- Eyes — Blurred vision, double vision, or sudden vision loss
- Face — Facial drooping or numbness, especially on one side
- Arms — Weakness or numbness in one arm
- Speech — Slurred speech or difficulty speaking
- Time — Call 911 immediately if symptoms appear
Fast Treatment Can Save Brain Function
Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability in Minnesota. Receiving treatment quickly can greatly improve recovery and reduce long-term effects.
CRMC is one of only 12 hospitals in Minnesota designated as an Acute Stroke Ready Hospital by the Minnesota Department of Health.
Advanced Stroke Care Close to Home
Through Allina Telehealth Neurology, patients in CRMC’s Emergency Department have 24/7 access to stroke specialists who can perform real-time neurological evaluations.
CRMC also provides emergency thrombolytic therapy, commonly called “clot-busting” medication, for eligible patients experiencing an ischemic stroke. When given quickly, these medications can restore blood flow to the brain and help reduce disability.
Every Minute Matters
Over the past decade, Minnesota has developed a coordinated stroke care system that allows 94% of residents to reach a designated stroke care facility within 30 minutes.
During Stroke Awareness Month, CRMC encourages everyone to learn the signs of stroke, act quickly, and share this potentially life-saving information with family and friends.
