We’ll guide you through the process, starting with one simple question: “What hurts?” From there, our comprehensive range of services covers everything from head to toe, ensuring you receive the care you need no matter the issue. Whether it’s a sports injury, joint pain, or any other orthopaedic concern, our expert team will personalize a plan to address your needs and get you back to doing what you love.

Fellowship Trained Surgeons
Cuyuna Regional Medical Center revamped its orthoapedic program in 2011. Over the past 13 years, the program has grown to include comprehensive care for spine, hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder, foot, and ankle. Led by five fellowship-trained surgeons, something unheard of in a rural community, our team collaborates closely with physician assistants and nurse practitioners, nurses, certified medical assistants, technicians, therapists, and an athletic trainer to provide comprehensive care tailored to your unique needs. Beyond just treating acute or chronic issues, we prioritize prevention as an integral part of our treatment approach, helping you stay active and injury-free in the long run.

Additionally, our nationally recognized medical facility proudly hosts the only Orthopaedic Fellowship program in Minnesota to specialize in both upper and lower-extremity adult reconstruction. This program is poised to welcome its third fellow this August, with Dr. Katherine Paul graduating in July of 2024.

Cuyuna Regional Medical Center’s Clinical Director of Orthopaedics, Adam English, CNP, describes the fellowship as an in-depth training tool. “Think of a mechanic that learns to specialize in a specific brand of vehicle or equipment. If you have a diesel engine, a diesel mechanic is the best qualified to fix it. Well, it’s no different for orthopaedics. Our team of Fellowship-trained Orthopaedic Surgeons have completed specialized training beyond the basic orthopaedic residency that surgeons complete. These 12–18 month fellowships are specific to an area of the body, along with the conditions requiring operative and non-operative management. Think of these surgeons as the A1 mechanic for a specific area.”

Head-to-Toe Care
In the fall of 2023, Cuyuna Regional Medical Center received the Orthopedic Center of Excellence designation from DNV Healthcare, a hospital accreditation organization. Our facility is Minnesota’s first and only critical access hospital to be awarded certification and center of excellence designation in four orthopaedic programs: Advanced Foot & Ankle Surgery Certification, Advanced Hip & Knee Replacement Certification, Advanced Shoulder Surgery Certification, and Advanced Spine Surgery Certification. These collective designations affirm our excellence in providing diagnostic services, surgical services, and therapies related to orthopaedic care.

Spine
Our team specializes in restoring lives affected by spinal injury, disease, and disorder. We provide advanced services, including less-invasive procedures for disc replacements, decompressions, and fusions.

Shoulder & Elbow
Our team provides thorough evaluations and precise treatments for various shoulder injuries. We prioritize conservative methods but offer surgery when necessary to alleviate pain and restore functionality.

Hand & Wrist
Specializing in orthopedic surgeries from elbows to fingertips, our team offers advanced reconstruction procedures integrating surgical and non-surgical treatments. Some surgeries can be done in the office without general anesthesia, and not all conditions require surgical intervention.

Hip & Knee
Our team of specialists treats common hip and knee conditions, including total knee and hip replacement. We utilize various non-operative interventions, including injections and physical therapy.

Foot & Ankle
We treat various foot and ankle conditions, from routine checkups to reconstructive foot surgery. We aim to develop a comprehensive after-care plan to ensure your long-term mobility and health.

Technology and Innovation
We’re revolutionizing surgical outcomes by harnessing cutting-edge technology like Artificial Intelligence (AI), including our innovative VELYS™ Robot-Assisted Solution for knee replacements. It is one-of-a-kind, providing real-time feedback to Cuyuna Regional Medical Center surgeon Erik Severson, MD, throughout the surgery.

In spine surgery, computer navigation assists James Stokman, MD, in accurately placing hardware throughout the procedure. Before using the navigation, a special x-ray that spins around the patient creates a 3D image of the spine, directly uploading it into the computer navigation.

Not all hand and wrist surgeries completed at our medical facility occur in the traditional hospital operating room. Cuyuna Regional Medical Center surgeon Susan Moen, MD, now performs procedures like carpal tunnel and cyst excision in the clinical setting. Patients can drive themselves to and from the appointment and can eat and drink up until the time of the procedure without medication restrictions. The procedures are still comfortable for patients and are done in our clinic operating room.

Over the past year, Cuyuna Regional Medical Center orthopaedic specialists treated just over 20,121 patients. Our team of five surgeons conducted over 2,300 orthopaedic surgeries.

Experience the difference at our hospital, where personalized orthopaedic care meets exceptional expertise. Whether you need surgery, rehabilitation, or preventive measures, our dedicated team is here to support you offering same-day care.
