Advanced Testing & Procedures
Electromyography (EMG) & Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)
Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) are tests that check the health of your nerves and muscles. Your provider may recommend them if you have symptoms such as numbness, tingling or weakness.
NCS uses small electrical impulses to measure how your nerves respond. EMG involves placing a thin, sterile needle into certain muscles to record their electrical activity.
Together, these results help your provider find the cause of your symptoms. EMG and NCS can diagnose conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, pinched nerves, muscle disorders, myasthenia gravis and ALS.
Botulinum Toxin (Botox®) Therapy
Therapeutic Botox injections can help manage conditions like chronic migraine, spasticity, dystonia, and other movement disorders.
Nerve Blocks
Targeted nerve injections can offer relief for patients with severe headaches, including occipital neuralgia and migraine.

Common Questions
What is Neurology?
Neurology is the study and treatment of problems with the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. Neurologists help people with conditions like headaches, seizures, Parkinson’s disease, memory problems, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and nerve pain. Because the nervous system affects the whole body, neurologists care for a wide variety of conditions that can impact movement, thinking, and everyday life.
When should I see a neurologist?
You should see a neurologist if you’re experiencing symptoms such as frequent headaches, memory loss, tremors, numbness, muscle weakness, or seizures. If symptoms are persistent, worsening, or difficult to diagnose, a neurologist can help identify the cause and recommend treatment.
Do I need a referral to see a neurologist?
Yes. Please talk with your primary care provider about getting a referral to neurology. This helps ensure your visit is covered by insurance and that you receive the right care for your needs.
What should I expect at my first neurology appointment?
Your first appointment typically includes a discussion of your symptoms and medical history, a neurological exam, and a review of any previous test results. Your neurologist may recommend additional testing, such as an MRI or EMG, to help confirm a diagnosis and create a personalized treatment plan.
