Cuyuna Regional Medical Center Registered Nurse Darcy Rowan of Emily was recently recognized by the Minnesota Hospital Association with the Good Catch for Patient Safety Award. The award is presented to Minnesota hospital staff who demonstrate their commitment to keeping patients safe by speaking up to prevent potential harm to a patient.
Rowan was admitting a patient with a history of anaphylactic reaction to penicillin when she noticed that Ancef had been ordered for the patient and verified by the overnight pharmacist. She alerted the pharmacy and surgeon and a different antibiotic was ordered preventing a potential severe allergic reaction for the patient. “Kudos to Darcy, we are proud to have her at CRMC,” exclaimed Director of Surgical Services Joni Gutknecht, R.N.
Rowan has been a nurse at CRMC for five years. She has also practiced at Grand Itasca Clinics and Hospital in Grand Rapids, Allina Medical Clinics and Hospitals in Hastings and at Mayo Clinics and Hospital in Cannon Falls. She earned an Associate Degree in Registered Nursing at Chippewa Valley Technical College in River Falls, Wisc., and a Licensed Practical Nurse Degree at Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount.
