Cuyuna Regional Medical Center and Presbyterian Homes & Services on June 9 broke ground for a state-of-the-art, multimillion-dollar nursing home on the Heartwood Senior Living Community campus in Crosby. The project should be complete late in the summer of 2024.
The new 45,000-square-foot nursing home is being built by Hytec Construction of Brainerd as an additional wing on the Heartwood campus across Highway 210 from Cuyuna Regional Medical Center’s (CRMC) main campus. CRMC was awarded funding through the State of Minnesota Moratorium Exception process, in support of the new care center. The $25 million facility will provide high quality care and services to meet the needs of residents of greater Minnesota.
“CRMC is pleased to be a partner in building this new nursing home,” said CRMC CEO Amy Hart. “The main purpose of the project is to enhance the living experience of the residents and to create a more efficient work environment for staff. We will continue to provide the same great care in a brand-new home.”
“Presbyterian Homes and Services (PHS) and Senior Housing Partners are also delighted to be a partner in this project,” said PHS CEO Dan Lindh. “This project brings to fruition our vision to build a one-of-a-kind senior community where seniors can live with independence and dignity while receiving the comprehensive medical services they need.”
CRMC’s current care center was built in 1962 and cannot be expanded at its current site because of congestion, required repairs, and structural issues. In addition, the current care center’s design is outdated and does not support resident independence and privacy.
Designed by BKV Architecture of Minneapolis, the new nursing home will have more of a neighborhood feel where residents have privacy and dignity, yet short distances to meet and connect with other residents and visitors. There will be lounge areas, a therapy room, central dining room, touch down nursing stations, outdoor living green spaces and views, and mainly private rooms.
The wing will also have a centralized nursing station for better staff efficiency and training space for employees. There will be 54 licensed beds, 48 of which are private rooms and three double rooms.
The nursing home is being built on land on the west side of Heartwood owned by Crosby Senior Services, a partnership between CRMC and PHS. When CRMC and PHS built Heartwood Senior Living Community in 2007, both organizations shared a vision to build a one-of-a-kind senior community where seniors could live with independence and dignity while receiving the comprehensive medical services they need.
CRMC’s current care center has an average census of 45 residents. Heartwood currently serves people aged 55 and older with 50 independent living apartments, 36 assisted living apartments, 12 memory care apartments, and 16 memory care suites.
PHS provides senior living options and services to older adults in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. The fourth largest nonprofit senior living community provider in the nation, PHS also serves the broader community through Optage® home and community services as well as Genevive, the largest geriatric primary care practice in Minnesota. The mission of the faith-based organization is to honor God by enriching the lives and touching the hearts of older adults.
