Bunion Surgery
Get Relief from Bunion Pain
Bunions can make everyday activities like walking or wearing shoes uncomfortable. When non-surgical treatments no longer provide relief, bunion surgery (bunionectomy) can help correct the problem and restore comfort. At Cuyuna Regional Medical Center, our foot and ankle specialists provide personalized care to reduce pain, improve alignment, and help you get back to your daily routine.

What Is a Bunion and When Is Surgery Needed?
A hallux valgus bunion is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe when the joint becomes misaligned, causing the toe to shift inward. A tailor’s bunion forms on the outside of the foot at the base of the pinky toe. Over time, both conditions can lead to ongoing discomfort and make everyday activities like walking or wearing shoes more difficult. Bunions often develop gradually and may worsen without treatment. Our team will always start with conservative care when possible and guide you through your options to find the right treatment for you.
You may be a candidate for bunion surgery if you experience:
- Ongoing pain or swelling
- Redness or irritation around the joint
- Difficulty wearing shoes comfortably
- Changes in the shape of your foot
- Trouble walking or staying active
- Symptoms that have not improved with non-surgical treatment
What to Expect from Bunion Surgery

You’ll meet with your provider to review your symptoms, imaging, and treatment plan. We’ll walk you through what to expect and answer your questions.
Day of Surgery
Many bunion procedures are performed as same-day surgery, meaning you go home the same day.
After Surgery
Recovery varies depending on the procedure, but most patients can expect:
- A period of limited weight bearing
- Use of a surgical shoe or boot
- Gradual return to normal activities
Your care team will guide you through each step of recovery.
Common Questions
How long does it take to recover from bunion surgery?
Recovery varies, but most people can return to normal activities within several weeks. Full healing can take a few months.
Will I be able to walk after surgery?
Yes. Most patients can walk with a special surgical shoe or boot shortly after the procedure, depending on your care plan.
Are there non-surgical treatments for bunions?
Yes. Options may include orthotics, padding, and wearing wider shoes. These can help manage symptoms but won’t correct the bunion.
Will the bunion come back after surgery?
Bunion surgery is designed to correct the problem, but following your recovery plan and wearing proper footwear can help prevent recurrence.
