Care for non-healing wounds
The certified Wound/Ostomy/Continence Care nurses at Cuyuna Regional Medical Center provide comprehensive care for non-healing wounds. They are available to care for patients Monday through Friday.
Their goal is to assess needs, create an individualized treatment plan, monitor progress toward healing and implement strategies to prevent wound recurrence. They can also coordinate referrals to additional specialists when necessary.
Wound care nurses assess, treat, and create care plans for patients with complex wounds, ostomies (surgically created opening in the body for the discharge of body wastes) and continence conditions. They demonstrate a high level of knowledge and expertise in the field, and often act as educators and consultants to staff nurses and other healthcare professionals.
Wound care nurses also help educate and provide care instructions for patients and families. Wounds often need continual care for the condition to properly heal. Wound care nurses teach patients and caregivers how to clean and dress wounds, and what to look for to prevent any complications such as infection.
Wound care nurses:
- Work with Physicians, Occupational and Physical Therapy, the Emergency Department, Podiatry, Urology and Lymphedema to provide optimal wound care
- Provide Diabetic and Dystrophic nail care
- Give negative pressure wound therapy to promote optimal wound healing
- Offer mechanical wound healing
- Consult with surgeons on new skin substitute for chronic non-healing wounds
- Work closely with the Care Center/TCU staff to provide wound/skin care to residents
- Review the best products for care with vendor representatives
