When Is Surgery Needed

Not all Achilles injuries require surgery. Many mild cases can be treated without it. However, surgery may be recommended if the tendon is fully torn or if non-surgical treatment has not worked. You may be a candidate for surgery if you experience:

  • A sudden “pop” or sharp pain in the back of your ankle
  • Trouble walking or pushing off your foot
  • Weakness in your lower leg
  • Swelling or bruising
  • Difficulty standing on your toes

What to Expect with Achilles Tendon Repair

Achilles tendon repair surgery reconnects the torn ends of the tendon so it can heal properly. The goal is to restore strength, improve movement, and reduce the risk of future injury.

Before Surgery

You’ll meet with your provider to review your injury, imaging, and treatment plan.

Day of Surgery

Most procedures are done as same-day surgery, so you can return home the same day.

After Surgery

Recovery takes time and support from your care team. Full recovery can take several months, depending on your injury. We’ll guide you through each step along the way. Most patients can expect:

  • A period of limited or no weight bearing
  • Use of a boot or cast
  • Gradual return to activity with physical therapy
