Anyone here have allergies? What are you allergic to? How do allergies work? I decided to talk about this canoe because one of the people I asked to walk today used their allergies as an excuse why they couldn’t. An allergic reaction is when a domino effect of the inflammatory reactions occur in your body. The thing that sets this off is that you come in contact with a substance that your body has already made antibodies to. Pollens and other allergens that are in the air are minuscule as opposed to smoke and dust pollutants. The bigger particles can irritate anyone if there is enough in the air, but allergens only irritate those who make the antibodies. Antibodies line the surface of mast cells and when the allergen lands on then—snap—it is like the reverse of a mouse trap! The mast cell releases histamines and leukotrienes. These are the things that cause your nose to run, eyes to water and all those wonderful symptoms we call allergies.
