UroLift® System for Enlarged Prostate (BPH)

The UroLift® System is a minimally invasive treatment that helps relieve urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate (BPH). Instead of removing prostate tissue, small implants gently hold the prostate out of the way to improve urine flow—without cutting, heating, or surgery.

How It Works

During the UroLift procedure, the urologist places tiny, permanent implants through a cystoscope inserted into the urethra.

These implants gently retract excess prostate tissue to create a wider channel for urine to flow without the need for cutting or heating tissue. Because it does not destroy or remove tissue, UroLift can often be performed in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia.

Benefits of the UroLift® Procedure

Minimally Invasive Approach
The UroLift procedure treats an enlarged prostate without cutting, heating, or removing tissue. Small implants lift prostate tissue away from the urethra to improve urine flow. The procedure is typically performed in a physician’s office using local anesthesia, with no hospital stay required.

Faster Symptom Relief and Recovery
Many men experience improvement in urinary symptoms soon after treatment. Because recovery time is generally short, most patients return to normal activities quickly with minimal disruption to daily life.

Preserves Sexual Function
UroLift is designed to avoid damage to nerves that support erectile and ejaculatory function, making it an option for men who want symptom relief while maintaining sexual health.

Long-Lasting Symptom Improvement
The implants provide ongoing relief by holding prostate tissue away from the urethra. If prostate growth changes over time, your urology provider can discuss additional treatment options.

Common Questions

Who is a good candidate?

You may be a good candidate if you are a male, 45 years of age or older, and have symptoms relating to BPH. Speak with your urologist to see if the UroLift® System treatment is right for you. If you have a known allergy to nickel, titanium or stainless steel, talk to your doctor about your allergy before getting a UroLift System treatment.

What should I expect during the treatment?

During the procedure, your doctor uses a specialized delivery device to place small, permanent implants. These implants gently hold the enlarged prostate tissue away from the urethra, helping improve urine flow.

The procedure typically takes about one hour and may be performed using local or general anesthesia. Medication is often provided to help keep you comfortable during treatment, though individual experiences with discomfort can vary.

Most patients do not require a catheter and do not need an overnight hospital stay, allowing for a quicker return to normal activities.

What happens post-treatment?

After the treatment, patients typically go home the same day without a catheter. There is minimal downtime posttreatment and many patients experience symptom relief in as early as 2 weeks. Patients may experience some urinary discomfort during the recovery period.

Most common side effects are mild to moderate and include pain or burning with urination, blood in the urine, pelvic pain, urgent need to urinate and/or the inability to control the urge. Most symptoms resolved within two to four weeks after the procedure.

Does the treatment affect my sexual function?

Clinical studies have shown the UroLift® System treatment does not cause new, sustained instances of erectile or ejaculatory dysfunction.

Does my insurance cover the treatment?

The UroLift® System treatment is covered by Medicare and all major private insurers. Contact your insurance provider for your specific coverage information.
