Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

An enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a common condition that affects many men as they age. The prostate is a small gland that sits below the bladder and surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body. When the prostate grows larger, it can press on the urethra and interfere with normal urine flow.

BPH is not cancer and does not increase your risk of prostate cancer. However, the symptoms can become uncomfortable and disruptive if left untreated.

Common Symptoms of an Enlarged Prostate

Symptoms of an enlarged prostate often develop gradually and may worsen over time. Common symptoms include:

  • A weak or slow urine stream
  • Frequent urination, especially during the day
  • Waking up at night to urinate
  • A feeling that the bladder does not fully empty

If these symptoms are affecting your sleep, daily routine, or quality of life, it may be time to talk with a urology specialist.

Treatments

Treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is based on how severe your symptoms are, how much they affect your daily life, your overall health, and your personal preferences. Many men start with conservative options and move to more advanced treatments if symptoms progress or no longer respond to medication.

Monitoring
Men with mild symptoms may only need regular check-ups and symptom monitoring. This approach focuses on tracking changes over time without immediate medical intervention.

Prescription Medications
Medications may be used to relax the muscles around the prostate and bladder neck or to shrink the prostate over time. While effective for many men, medications may cause side effects or become less effective as symptoms worsen.

Advanced Therapies

For men who do not get enough relief from medication—or who prefer a longer-lasting solution—minimally invasive treatments can improve urinary symptoms without traditional surgery. These procedures are typically outpatient and designed to reduce recovery time.
