Two Cuyuna Regional Medical Center employees recently received an award that recognizes hospital professionals who demonstrate their commitment to keeping patients safe by speaking up to prevent a potential patient safety issue.

Infection Control Nurse Sara Dorschner, R.N., of Brainerd and Medical Staff Coordinator Jodi Christopher of Crosby were recognized by the Minnesota Hospital Association with Good Catch for Patient Safety awards for creating a safer environment across the state.

The Minnesota Uniform Application is used by Minnesota health care facilities as a component of credentialing providers. For years, the application has listed Tuberculosis (TB) testing for providers as testing within the previous 12 months. Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) requirements for healthcare personnel have differed from the application’s stated requirements for years. Incoming providers to CRMC and organizations across the state expressed frustrations for delayed privileges; when they rightly thought they had completed everything required for appointment as listed on the application.

While other organizations used workarounds, Dorschner and Christopher worked with the Minnesota Association of Medical Staff Services (MAMSS) to correct this long-standing issue. Dorschner provided regulatory and health information related to TB testing and screening. Christopher used her connections in the organization to keep the process moving forward. Through their collaboration with MAMSS, the Minnesota Uniform Application has been adjusted to support the current and ever-changing requirements for TB screening of healthcare personnel.

In using best practice recommendations by the MDH, the influx and spread of this dangerous disease can be prevented. These employee’s response to this issue has created opportunities for safer care across the state.

The Good Catch for Patient Safety program recognizes hospital professionals for actions that protect patients. All award winners are entered into the running to receive the quarterly award and those winners are eligible to be honored with annual Good Catch for Patient Award presented at the Minnesota Hospital Association Annual Awards banquet.
