CRMC Reaches 100 Robotic Spine Procedure Milestone
Cuyuna Regional Medical Center (CRMC) has reached a significant milestone in robotic spine surgery. Orthopaedic spine surgeon Dr. James Stokman has completed 100 procedures using the VELYS™ Active Robotic Assistance Platform, representing nearly 10% of all VELYS Spine cases performed nationwide.
CRMC is one of only two hospitals in Minnesota offering the technology, alongside Mayo Clinic St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. CRMC was also the fourth program in the nation to launch the VELYS Spine platform and is now one of 23 active programs nationwide.
Dr. Stokman performed CRMC’s first case using the technology on June 27, 2025.
How Robotic Spine Surgery Works
The VELYS Spine platform is a robotic and navigation system designed to enhance precision and personalization during spine surgery.
The system combines a robotic arm with advanced navigation and VELYS ADAPTIVE TRACKING™ Technology. During surgery, the technology continuously tracks and adjusts to patient movement, providing the surgeon with real-time guidance throughout the procedure.
This technology gives Dr. Stokman another advanced tool to support precision during spine surgery while tailoring care to each patient.
Growing Experience With VELYS Spine Technology
The VELYS Spine platform is still relatively new. In June 2026, the VELYS program reached its 1,000th patient treated nationwide.
At CRMC, Dr. Stokman has completed 100 cases using the platform. His experience with the technology also extends beyond CRMC as he shares techniques nationally and helps train other surgeons.
“We’re redefining what’s possible at a critical access hospital by offering cutting-edge robotic technology for our spine patients at CRMC,” said Dr. Stokman. “This isn’t just about innovation; it’s about expanding access to high-quality care. Sharing these techniques nationally and helping train other surgeons means more patients can benefit.”
Advanced Spine Care in Central Minnesota
Access to this technology is helping CRMC become a destination for complex spine care. Patients are traveling from across the region and beyond for evaluation and treatment.
For patients, CRMC’s investment in robotic spine surgery means access to advanced technology and a surgeon with extensive experience using the VELYS Spine platform, close to home.
