CRMC Honors Employees With Annual Excellence Awards
Cuyuna Regional Medical Center (CRMC) is proud to recognize employees whose compassion, innovation and dedication make a lasting difference for patients, coworkers and the community. Each year, employees nominate their peers for annual awards, and a selection committee chooses recipients who exemplify CRMC’s values.
Leon Schefer Legacy Award
The Leon Schefer Legacy Award honors an employee who demonstrates inspiration, community spirit, approachability, relationship-building and a commitment to excellence.
Formerly known as the I CARE Ambassador Award, the award was renamed in memory of Leon Schefer, a former CRMC employee who passed away in a car accident in March. Leon was known throughout the organization for his warm greetings, kind heart and genuine compassion for others.

This year’s recipient is Kristen Elliott, SLP.
Kristen’s expertise and dedication have helped expand Speech Pathology services throughout the region, including the addition of pediatric swallow evaluations for children. Just as importantly, Kristen creates an environment where patients feel heard, supported and cared for during every visit.
Big Fish of the Year Award
Throughout the year, CRMC recognizes employees with the Trophy Fish Award for going above and beyond while demonstrating excellence in patient experience, communication, teamwork or compassion.
At the end of the year, one recipient is selected to receive the Big Fish of the Year Award.

This year’s honoree is Brandon Schyma of the Facilities team. Brandon was recognized for his outstanding communication, teamwork and compassion during CRMC’s Fourth of July parade and throughout the year. His willingness to help wherever needed makes a positive impact across the organization.
Mary Lou Houle Award
The Mary Lou Houle Award recognizes exceptional nursing care and honors the legacy of Mary Lou Houle, who began her nursing career at the original CRMC (Miner’s Hospital) in 1959. Throughout her career, she was known for her unwavering dedication to patients, families and the Cuyuna Range community.

This year’s recipient is Dana Larson, RN.
Dana exemplifies excellence through calm leadership, clinical expertise and an unwavering commitment to patients and colleagues. As a certified perianesthesia nurse and primary day charge nurse, Dana is a trusted resource who consistently promotes safe, high-quality care while supporting the success of the entire team.
Congratulations to this year’s award recipients and to the many employees who were nominated. Their commitment to excellence, compassion and exceptional patient care continues to make a difference for the patients and communities CRMC serves.
